The Wizard of Oz - Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead

So Margaret Thatcher is dead. Most of my female friends are banging on about how she might have done some bad things, but she's a role model for women (everyones entitled to their opinions, but it's just so predictable). New Zealand's first elected woman Prime Minister (Helen Clark) managed to run the country without fucking over swathes of people, and I don't personally hold her as a strong role model.
It's incredibly sad to me that they use this person as a role model, "She was a woman and people remember her... WE MUST UNQUESTIONINGLY IDOLISE HER," is pretty much how I imagine these people thinking.

I really think the opposite is true, she did so much damage to not only this country but others too (I'm talking about her support of Pinochet, the Khmer Rouge and at least a sympathiser for Apartheid). Her government dismantled industry in a short sighted and destructive manner leaving behind depressed communities with often high levels of crime and unemployment reliant heavily on state benefits which, surprise surprise, the current government is working on slashing. Hmmm, nice work.

I'm not naive enough to think the reforms and measures she brought in weren't partially necessary, especially as the Unions had such a strong grip in some parts of the country. It's just a shame that the current Tory government doesn't take the same approach to the current situation with regards to the bankers holding the country to ransom. Double standards yo.

And for better or worse her defining feature was and is her gender, so she's tainted that for other women following her, maybe irrevocably.

Yes, she is dead, but I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say rest in peace. She showed no empathy during her life so why should she expect any in her death.

Good riddance.
