Rap News 6 - Wikileaks Cablegate - The Truth Is Out There
The American Government being embarrassed by leaked documents does not justify such an overblown reaction. It also does not mean other governments and companies must bow down and agree (once again) with the US government, regardless of the beliefs of the people they purport to represent. There is no evidence any leaks have directly resulted in a single death, but how many hundreds of thousands of people have died (and will die) as a result of this very same governments foreign policies? 90% of them will be innocent people who are too young to know what is happening, do not even know where America is, or who Al Qaeda are. But who cares?! If it was my family or friends being killed, maimed, orphaned in a 'justifiable' way, I wouldn't sit back at let it happen, and think "this is for my own good, my family is worth sacrificing in exchange for the supposed security of the people who are doing this."
It's terrible that several governments have successfully sold several wars to the people, and the media, based on twisted information (if not outright lies). The more I read, the more sickened I am. For that government (as well as several other governments, especially the British) to claim the moral high ground is disgusting and offensive to me, they need to come to realise that they are not the judge, jury, and executioner of the world just because they behave like it. WikiLeaks is a huge mirror which has been held up to the worlds governments, and, unsurprisingly, they don't seem to like what they see in it. Why should people feel any loyalty to their governments when they are treated like this? And why should the debatable circumstances under which these documents came to be known overshadow their behaviour.(Incidentally, Bradley Manning, who is suspected of leaking these cables, along with the Iraq & Afghan War Logs (which had 400,000 documents that documented the deaths of 109,000 people) and Collateral Murder is being held in solitary confinement. If convicted Manning could face up to 52 years in prison. He's only 23, the same age as me). I wonder will the American Government and Military spend any time, effort, or money on investigating a single event uncovered by any of these documents... probably not. Will they stop and think about WHY he felt moved to do this (if he did do it)... definitely not. Because that would be admitting their overwhelming guilt.
I'm proud my home country (New Zealand) has stood up to the US government, re: The New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act, and refusal to participate in the war in Iraq because it (rightly) was not sanctioned by the UN. New Zealand is a small country in the world, both in terms of size and political impact, but it shows that it will not be a pushover.
Anyway, ramble ramble. I like this video.
